Cutting the exhaust

I am tight on money right now and it has been suggested to me that I cut off my muffler. If it is true that it will make it louder(obivously), give my engine better air flow, and give me better gas mileage, then why not do it? I don't care that its illegal, I don't think I will be caught out here in Lubbock. If anyone has had success doing this or had trouble with this please post and let me know. Otherwise in a couple days, the muff comes off.

I thing a loud exhaust sounds good, but theres a BIG difference between a nice sounding loud one, and a noisy one. If you just cut the muffler off they sound like shit. The open pipe lets all the good and bad noise out, and the bad noise seems to drown out the good noise.

If you want to do it though, it will free up some air flow, but your not going to see any milage improvement

I do intend to extend it out the side to avoid fumes. I have heard other trucks with the pipes cut and they sound great to me, so thats why I was wondering how it sounded on broncos specifically. Basically to put on a nice exhaust system i'm going to need a couple hundred bucks. Unless I find that it will hurt my engine or something, I think i'm probably going to do it. Cut it that is.

Well it figures
When I was 18 I also thought anything that was loud sounded good.
Now I have made exhaust systems with different mufflers and modified mufflers that are louder than no muffler at all and it lets out only the good noise. The bad noise gets quieted down.
The best system I have done yet is on my F150. I dont think I can improve the sound any more than it is. And I wauld say its louder than just an open pipe with the muffler cut off.

The CATs muffle more than the muffler does.. My truck wasnt much louder without the muffler..Maybe alittle. It was deeper sounding but nothing to run home and tell mom about.

& NO

Its not illegal! At least not in Calif. & I doubt texas is any more strict..
the muffler is Designed to MUFFLE sound & thats about it..

I went and got Blanco Smog checked at a test only place with out a muffler & they said thats fine & not an issue..

& mine is not that loud considering I have the factory cats.

Mine's a '90 Whats yours?

I've had people ask me if I was running a Flow master..

& I tell them NOPE!:thumbup

& I did notice an Increase in power right off the Bat when I removed the muffler...
Not alot but enuff to feel it!:thumbup

I'm a conservitive 38 yr old & I love the way it sounds with muffler cut off!
& just have a elbow pointing it out in front of the Pass. side Back tire.

I'm also told its fairly quite because I'm also running factory exhaust Manifolds..
& that if I had Headers it would be much louder..

Cam, I had headers on my f-150 (exact same exhaust as whats under my bronco now..I took it off when my wife wrecked it) and now its running on manifolds and I only noticed a sound diffrence and maybe alittle buttometer loss..Nothing to burn tires with though.

You have 2 cats on your bronco. That will make a difference in the sound. But I think it is a good idea. I build power units, Waukesha Natural Gas engines and we only use a CAT on them and some are in Residential areas. Not a bad idea there white bronco:beer

Quack, the 2 cats are stock...the front is a NOX and the rear is HC/CO

If sparks made it all the way to the back end of a truck..then something needs to be done about the way the truck is running, not the muffler being there or not... (CA IS GAY)
