i think its just the trans. fluid. mine in my 95 was quite dirty, & had the same downshift knock. after a few oil changes, its never had any problems since. it used to knock on acceleration from a stop too. not any more. hope your turns out fine too.

My tranny clunked and would slam into gears until I changed the fluid and filter. Works wonderful after that.

picture

heres the only photo i have now
will be sending more soon. I paid 4500.00
95,ooo miles how did i do?
I installed the warn hubs on sunday. Not to hard at all ,also checked the hubs to see if it was installed properly as the warn instructions say.also had front and rear diff grease, transfercase grease ,tranny fluid purged and oil changed .now were checking the suspension and front brakes. They are starting to shimmy and shake, seems to be a warped rotor. The tranny seems to shift good but there is some driveline backlash when you take off and sometimes stop. Also I think the ball joints have some play.!!!??At least the engine is strong,, See Ya

Hey dude, congrats on an excellent purchase. I got a 95 too, but I after I bought mine, I had to drive 10 hours to get home, so I quickly found every little problem with it on the way home... is the clunking when you take off or is it when the tranny shifts?

Mine is a eddie bauer, so I have the bronze color on the bottom and top, but Im really thinkin of going all black when I repaint it, the all black look is soo sharp, but am I the only one that has noticed that the Ford black from that year isnt quite as black as other make's black??

It was pretty decent when new, I just don't think it holds it's color well. My theory is this...keep in mind this is just my thoughts....Ford had problems with their paint flaking some time in the mid 80's and I think what ever they used to toughen it up just doesn't hold good color...maybe??? Anyway my paints tough alright, but it's tough to get that "deep black" shine...I'll just repaint soon...

My mom has a black Tahoe, and when both are shined up and next to each other, its just not the same, but with some extra $, it will be!!! Its not like its faded, like you said, its just not as deep I guess

formally tileit1

Im gonna get the 95 painted soon.my friend Brian paints at a shop behind my business.we got a set of patch panels for the rear wheel wells and then itll be back in black. It is amazing how many blacks there are. I looked through the paint catalog at the auto body shop and there are many blacks, guess ill stick with stock color.
to my amazement my truck with 96,000 has all the problems you all have described. just nothing to serious.

now i need to replace radius arm bushing on passenger side. its pretty sloppy. the bushing is almost gone. They want 180. bucks at local ford dealer,im not so sure at my ability to do this on my own?? or should i be thinking SKYJACKER LIFT?? looks like Ill have 10 k in this thing real quick.

I can't believe nobody mentioned the infamous slip yoke problems on these. Not a big deal, really, but could be causing his clunk. You need to take the rear driveshaft out.Matchmark the two halves and remove the clamp on the boot.Pull the two halves apart and put some grease in the joint.Takes care of alot of the mysterious clunk on acceleration and when stopping.

and also this:
"Another common complaint of the 1356 is that it will sometimes exhibit a driveline thump or clunk on take off. Many shops have spent considerable time balancing drive shafts, replacing u-joints, mounts, etc. without success. The problem lies inside the transfer case itself. A careful examination of the rear output shaft will reveal excessive end play between the shaft and the rear bearing, and between the rear bearing and the extension housing. You should use shims to take up the endplay between the output shaft and the rear bearing retaining snap ring (figure 7). You can use Chrysler part #00015128 for a shim kit that will enable you to take up the endplay between the bearing and the output shaft snap ring...Figure 8 shows how to take up slack between the rear output bearing and the extension housing using Spicer shim kit 701121X which fits the outside of the bearing and prevents it from traveling rearward against the extension housing. This shim is designed for a pinion shim in a Dana 35 rear end and fits perfectly. By using these methods to fix the endplay of the output shaft you will solve many problems that have baffled dealers and other repair shops for years..."
