Wrong forum to post this request in.

I've got pictures from when I did mine, I just haven't gotten around to writing it up yet. I'll try to do that in the next week or so.

Here is pics of when I did mine.
The trans cooler was 44.00 at partsamerica.com.

[IMG][/IMG]

I had to take the top two bolts out of the radiator and push it back toward the fan to get those retaining zip tie things pushed through the air conditioning condenser. Small hands and arms really help in doing this.

[IMG][/IMG]

I just ran the hoses under the truck radiator support to the transmission lines were they make there first bend to go under the fan.
I cut the transmission lines at the bend, don’t use a drimel to do this. Learned the hard way
[IMG][/IMG]

I ended up buying a line cutter and a flaring tool. Total about 22 at checkers.
The transmission line is smaller than the rubber hose that comes with the kit. I used the flaring tool to make a nipple so the rubber hose would have something to get a bite of it. I used two clamps on the hoses to make sure it stayed secured.

Always choc the tires when removing the rear driveshaft! Its amazing how fast you can move out from under a moving truck.

Here are pictures of my setup. I am too lazy to do another write up.
Here is a link to the pictures.
http://www.supermotors.org/vehicles/...=25118#content

Dumb tool I made to pull most of the tranny fluid out.

Old setup, had to remove it due to problems with the original cooler.

Note hi-tech brackets made out of 1/8" x 1 1/2" alum. metal.

New cooler installed. I used cable ties to hold it in place while I was working on it. Smaller cooler is for Power Steering fluid.

Detail of how I adapted the tranny cooler lines from the tranny. I used 5/16" flare fitting to 5/16" to 1/4" male fitting. Then a 1/4" to 3/8" hose barb. This line goes to the filter first then to the bottom of the tranny cooler. Then from the top of the cooler to the tranny.

Hope this helps...

Oh, sweet, hows does the filter look through the grill, can you really see it. I am handy with a wrench but i dont want to drill into the frame and that setup looks like something my lazy ass could do.

Can't really see it all that well where I have mine. If you look hard enough. But the filter that I use on the tranny is red/black so it is kind of hidden. I will see if I have any pictures of it handy.

Here you go, last year on a trail called China Wall. You can just barley see it between the fog lamp and the Ford emblem in the grill.

cool, thanx that set up will save time and probably my frame because I don't have much confidence in drilling into the frame. And what size piece of metal did you mount the filter to. And one more question, I just ordered the perma cool kit with the gauge, will running that be a problem with the setup you have. you just saved my tranny.

Should not be any type of problem. Once you pull the grill you will find tons of room to route whatever hoses/lines/wires you need.

I used 1/8" thick aluminum sticks that I bought at Lowes lumber yard. They have them in 3' sections. The one I used was 1 1/2" thick by however long it needed to be. I just held it up and marked it. I forget what I paid for them but it was only a few bucks each.

Once you have the grill off you will see how I mounted it. I just drilled 3/8" holes in the plastic frame in front of the AC condenser. Be carful not to puncture the AC condenser as it will be a total PITA if you do. I had an assortment of 3/8" bolts so I can't say buy X number of this size...

Gosh I have had the flare tools forever. Probably Harbor Freight, Checkers Auto, Napa, ACE Hardware etc...

$10.00-$20.00 for the set.

i keep forgeting to put all my questions in at once, sorry. Do you have any cooling issues with the filter and the trans cooler in front of the radiator? I know thats where the cooler goes but does the filter affect anything?

Not a problem, ask away. It works really well there as it sheds a ton of heat before the fluid goes through the cooler. It does not appear to affect the engine cooling at all.

hey i got a question for you about putting the filter in the grill like that. i was going to run my line that feeds the tranny fluid into the radiator i was wondering if there would be a probelm with the fluid running up like that? im thinking no because it runs almost straight up into the radiator.

No problem at all with the setup. The only thing is to keep an eye on the fluid level when you first charge it up. I usually fill the oil filter with ATF before I put it on. That way the tranny never runs out of juice.

From the oil filter I head over to the bottom of the cooler and then from the top of the cooler it goes back to the return on the tranny. This should keep air pockets from forming in the line.

One very important thing that nobody seems to talk much about is what type/brand of ATF to use in the E4OD. I know heat is the AT's mortal enemy, and I also know that synthetic ATF's can deal with heat much better than the non-synthetics.
Me personally I do a full trans service once a year. I drain the pan and I also drain the torque converter, and when I drain it, the Mobil-1 fully synthetic ATF I use always looks and smells just like the day I put it in. I have yet to install a remote ATF filter, but I did install a big ass B & M super-cooler, and a Auto Meter trans temp gauge so I can keep a eye on it all the time. So far I have noticed that even on the hottest days of Summer with the AC on and sitting in NYC traffic, the temp seldom gets up as high as 200*F so I think the cooler does its job very well.
If and when my E4OD kicks the bucket(it only has 92,000 easy miles on it now).....I will buy a rebuilt unit that has been built for heavy duty use, and take good care of her for the duration.

I don't know what is recommended for synthetics, but I use Redline D4. I've been running Redline D4 for about 45K miles. I let it go too long between my last change (3 years and 45K) but just changed it last month - also installed the external Perma-Cool filter (thanks Sixlitre for the recommendation). In that 45K miles, I used and abused my bronco by towing 5K lbs from Ohio to Maryland, then to California (evey mile of I70) and back to Maryland. When my e4od finally gives up, hopefully I'll be able to put in a ZF5.

I started with Redline Synthetic oil and slowly started replacing all my fluids with Redline. I now have it in my e4od, TC, and both axles. sadly I had to switch back to dino oil in the engine because I have a nasty oil leak (either the pan gastket or the rear main). At $8+ / quart I don't feel like leaving that in the parking lot. Once I finally fix the oil leak, I'll switch right back to Redline.

I do not work for Redline, I am just a very satisfied customer.

Edit: BTW, the used and abused Redline I drained out of the e4od and torque converter, looked almost as good as the new stuff I put in. I couldn't believe it.
