Lightbulb Different kind of Sag. pump install, not 56k Pictures fixed

Just to be different I decided to score a different type of Saginaw Power Steering Pump. This one uses an external reservoir, and is off of an AMC Eagle (remember those). However this style of pump is used on several different types of autos/trucks. The external reservoir is from a mid-90's econo-box, about 1/4 of the tiny chevy's sold has this reservoir. I also scored a large tranny cooler for the pump assembly. The total price was $50.00 for the remanufactured pump at a rebuilder, $3.00 for the reservoir, $5.00 for the tranny cooler and about $15.00 for the misc. hoses and hose clamps. I had the Saginaw bracket from a 1990 E-350 Ford van lying around.

All in all it worked great in Moab last weekend.

Here are some pictures of the install:

Rear view of same bracket

Front view of same bracket with new pump and pulley installed

Bracket and pump installed, without AC pump installed

Reservoir installed on bottom two AC bolts with "custom" aluminum brackets

View of tranny cooler I used, when time permits I will install an oil filter assembly next to the one for the tranny.

Crud, picture links appear not to be working at the moment. Here is a link to my SuperFord account.

I can't find this at all for an AMC Eagle. The closest I'm coming is the listing for the 94 and up H1s. Do you have more info on where to find them? I think it will make an OBA setup with a sag much easier. Here are the part numbers I've found.

6002107 - Reservoir
6002106 - Cap, PS Reservoir
6003042 - Pump, PS

As it turns out I gave out bad info on the vehicle that I listed. I took what the rebuilder told me as fact. It turns out the best place to find this style of pump is a 1 ton chevy van. They use the external resivoir as well.

Cool. I'll give that a try. I just found some a NAPA part number, but NAPAs site does not show what people said it was. I'll check on the Chevy Van.

Just found it on the partsamerica.com site, look up the pump for a 1990 Chevrolet G10 van. You will need the one with Reservoir, that is the can that fits on the outside of the pump not the external reservoir that you will also need. The can on the picture is different than the one I used so you might want to check the pictures carefully. If possible go to an actual parts store and see if they will let you check out the pump book, most parts houses will have a Saginaw or rebuilders book with mechanical drawings of the pumps. The can that you want is the one like in my pictures. The other ones will be a PITA to use. See the second picture above...

The Chevy vans have a nice sized external reservoir as well.

If you get a new pump get the pulley from a 1990's era Ford Van. There is a difference in the diameter between the chevy and ford pulleys. The chevy pulley should be around 6.5" in diameter and the ford pulley is 5.75" in diameter. Both have a center hole of around .755". I found the chevy/GM style pulley spun a little too slow at idle to use.

Sweet. Thanks! I'll be using the OBA kit pulley. Still have to get it machined though. Will use the regular ford sag pulley I have now until that is done. Do you know if partsamerica will take any sag core for it, or does it have to be the exact model?

AFAIK they will take any sag, or if like the checkers auto near my house any P/S pump. The people behind the counter are mostly clueless. The sags usually come without a outter reservoir so to them a sag is a sag...

Where did you pick up your remote reservoir? PartsAmerica doesn't seem to list one.

Got mine at a junk yard. If you have a u-pull it place handy look for that Chevy Van I mentioned or a BMW, they have a pretty cool one. I got mine off of some econo box. Tons of vehicles use them.
