Question Help! Can't move the shifter

1996 5.8L automatic. Stopped at the store and couldn't shift into park. Then I couldn't really move the shifter into any gear. I had to slam it into park to get the key out. Assumed something broke inside the steering column. Un hooked the cable and tried to get it into park so I could start and manually shift it into drive to get it home. I could pull the cable out but couldn't get it into park.

Got it in N and pulled it home. Took the steering column apart and the aluminum shifter is intact except there appears to be a plastic bushing that has slid down and the shifter is really sloppy.

Is this enough for it to not shift?? Or is there another issue since I couldn't get it in park by pushing the cable in by hand??

Any help would be appreciated. Don't want to take it to Ford unless I have to.

If so, Yes..prob is the issue

Install transmission column shift selector tube (column shift only). Coat gearshift lever socket bushing (7335) with Ignition Lock Grease F0AZ-19584-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C232-A. Tighten screws to 7-11 Nm (62-97 lb-in).



Shift Cable Adjustment

CAUTION: Under no circumstances should the cable be adjusted in any position other than D (drive) for the C6 transmission (7003) or (D) (overdrive) for the E4OD transmission.

1. From inside the vehicle, place the transmission range selector lever in the DRIVE position (C6) or the OVERDRIVE position (4R70W and E4OD). Hang an improvised three-pound weight (#1) on the transmission range selector lever (#2).
2. Raise vehicle on a hoist and position suitable safety stands under vehicle.
3. Remove the shift cable (#5) from the transmission lever ball stud.
4. Pull down the lock tab on the shift cable body.
5. Position the transmission range selector lever (#2) in the DRIVE position (C6) or the OVERDRIVE position (E4OD). This is three detents from the front-most lever position with the first position counting as one.
6. Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission lever ball stud.
7. Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position.
8. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle from hoist. Remove the three-pound weight from the transmission range selector lever.
9. After making the adjustment, check for park engagement. Check the transmission range selector lever in all detent positions with the engine (6007) running to make sure correct detent/transmission actions. Readjust if necessary.

Shift Indicator Cable

1. Remove the four screws from the lower steering column shroud. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
2. Rotate transmission range selector lever clockwise until it bottoms out in first gear.
3. Rotate transmission range selector lever counterclockwise three detents (overdrive position).
4. Hang a three pound weight on the transmission range selector lever.
5. Center pointer in the middle of D if equipped with C6 transmission, or (D) if equipped with E4OD transmission, by rotating the thumbwheel located on right-hand side of steering column actuator housing.

There are no holes to thread in the usual bolts for a steering wheel puller..."

I'd be willing to bet it is the tranny shifter cable. Same thing happened with mine and I had a tough time getting it in and out of gear.

I had a fuse that blew that prevented the interlock pin from dropping, check to make sure your brake lights are working. If not, check fuse.

Great advise. Thanks for the help. The bushing is definately worn out. Thinking it could be more than that since I can't move the cable in by hand. I will check the break lights and fuse latter today and report back with the findings.

Besides the Visual look at each fuse; ck for 12 v w/resr light or meter because the Maxi Fuse may be shot

Finally got to work on it last night. Shifter tube is good. Bushings where shot. I replaced those and put it back together. Made sure shifter moves smoothly without cable hooked up. Unhooked cable from tranny and tranny shifts fine. Hooked cable to shifter and tried to shift it without it being hooked to tranny and it was a no go. The cable is shot. picked up a new one today. Hopefully install that tonight.

Shift Indicator Cable

Shift Indicator Adjustment; "...I always unhook the cable (shifting to L or 1 makes it easier), then spin the wheel. You can't really get to the indicator end to unhook it - I do it at the shifter (wheel) end. There's nothing inherently wrong with removing the wheel assy. But when you're trying to pull the cluster, it's easier to feed the bare cable end back around the column & thru the wiring harness. If the cable sheath is white, it's probably about to break no matter how careful you are. If it's black with mesh reinforcement, you almost can't break it; "...the adjusting wheel is for 92-up columns..."

Finally stopped snowing and raining and got the gear shift cable replaced. Truck shifts as good as new. Cable was suprising easy to swap. Only took 15 min. Thanks for the all the help.
