swapping e40d for c6 in 88 351?

has any one swapped out the 3spd for a 4 spd e4od. if so what were some of the mods you had to make?

meh...were it me I'd swap the c6 for an AOD. The E4OD is completely and utterly computer controlled...you'll either need a ECU from a truck that came with your engine and the E4OD tranny..you can always buy a standalone unit like the baumanator...http://www.baumannengineering.com/tcs.htm...IMO it's too much work...

The first two things that come to mind are that you'll need a rear axle with a tone ring in it like an 8.8 or a 10.25, and you'll need the right ECM to run it, and the associated wiring. Probably need the E40D cross member too, plus the correct shift linkage.

If you can get the E4OD for cheap, buy it and keep it. There are people looking for them and you can make some money on the deal.

Bronco Info: Tore down, Beat down, just F*CKED.

I am in the process of doing this right now. Fortunately. I have a 90 Bronco that was the donor, and everything that was on the 90. I have put onto my 88. All wiring from the engine compartment to the rear of the chassis.

Rescue Bronc, I believe has done this swap as well. For me, and the way I am doing it. It hasn't been easy. Course, I am doing an engine build as well. LOL, I am going to be doomed with problems.

The main parts you will need is the engine wiring harness, ECU and the E40D together. I was informed that you can splice in the O/D button, so , you wouldn't need the chassis wiring. And deal with the behind the dash wiring. I said screw it, I have all of it, I am using it.

You wil have to drill new holes on the chassis for the E40D's crossmember. Driveshafts that went with the E40D.

I am sure I am missing something, maybe someone else will chime in.

Best bet is to get the whole vehicle that you are getting the tranny from if possible IMO.

Bronco Info: Picador 4 door bronco EFI 460 E4OD electric shift 1356 Tcase 3.55 10.25 rear, 3.54 Dana 44 front

it isn't that hard
hell I installed a E4OD into a 1979 4x4
and installing one in my fourdoor bronco which is also a 1979

if you can read a schematic

installing it in a 88 will be pretty straight forward
the 88 already has a tone ring on the rear that started in 1987 not real sure if that is needed for the ECM if you have a VSS on the Tcase
if you find a donor rig for the tranmission crossmember 89-91 be easies however 92-96 stuff should work as well
find a ECM for 351/E4OD the transmission has its own harness no need to change the chassis harness you do need to add the pins in the ECM plug on your original harness (thus the schematic) Fireguys site has the schematics and pinouts listed

I am wanting to go the other way in my '92. Maybe we could trade some parts?
I am not quite ready to do it yet though.

How do you address the VSS?

How do you address the Vss? I am installing a 94 5.8, E4OD, and BW transfer into my 79 Bronco. I was thinking on keeping my 205 until I seen the problem you run into. That will save me a-lot of aggrevation. I have the 94 as a donor so I have everthing I need except a way to address the VSS. Also does your 460 have the 1/4 inch hose that comes off the intake and goes to the radiator? If so how did you address that while keeping the 79 radiator?
I think your truck is Awesome, you are quite talented.
Thanks.

I used the factory VSS in the back of the Tcase which ford used up to 91

the rear axle sensor is intended for the ABS and in 92 also did the duty for the cruise and ECM via a little conversion box

my year of 460 didn't use the 1/4" hose so that issue never came up
