restoring an optima?

1 - I have had a yellow top for 3 years (and it has been great )

2 - I shorted out my electrical system. you know, positive direct to ground.

3 - My Yellow Top is slowly shitting the bed. Cranks slower and slower every morning. Thankfully, my truck starts quickly.

I doubt there is, but is there any way to give this battery new life? Trickle charge, etc? I figure I wasted a cell and that it is done fer good.

As far as restoring a battery, I would look and see if your charger has a deep charge mode. Most chargers will only top off the charge that a battery has. Marine chargers and some of the better auto chargers have a deep charge cycle, which depending on the battery could be all night. Then they go into a "float" mode, which maintains the charge if any draw is put on the battery while the charger is hooked up.

1) Charge the battery A MINIMUM OF 100 amps for 15 mins ( @ 14.5+ volts)
a) Let battery and charger cool for 15 mins
2) Repeat step one at least four times - after letting battery cool 15 mins after each charge
3) Charge at 2-10 amps (trickle / automatic) for 24 hours minimum
4) Test the battery

Back to the question that was asked, I think that you "might" have done some damage to the battery with the reverse connection, so try and get it load tested, trickle charge it, and then load test again. I have heard from a few places that the Optimas' are not what they used to be as far as durability goes, lately. I can't complain about the life that I got from my old Orange Top, however.... it finally died after 12 years and 5 vehicles, so maybe there is something to the lack of quality lately?

I think any battery will fail depending on how long it's hooked up in reverse no matter who makes it.

Mudhound, There is something about the Quality of optima batteries going down hill, There is a post somewhere telling about how they are putting higher levels of Tin in the lead and other things. Thats why I bought a Interstate Black instead of an optima yellow.... I honestly think the Interstate will last longer because I will purchase 2 for less than the money that the optima yellow would cost.

I have been running Autozone "yellowtop" batteries in everything for the last several years, and so far, no complaints to date... even in the dead of winter.

I've gone through about 4 of them. I can't stand Duralast batteries.
