Seat belt lock mechanism

I have a 89 bronco and I'm not sure if the seat belt lock works like it's supposed to work. Usually, you only have to pull the seat belt pretty fast and it locks (at least that's how it works in my volvo). When you do the same in my bronco it won't lock - so I spend some time looking into the locking mechanism and figured out that it only locks when there is a sudden movement (eg you brake very hard). Is this mechanism really working and safe - I'm not really feeling safe like it is right now ;-)

Bronco Info: 82 bronco 408w 4" lift 35's, 88 bronco 351w all stock on 31s

it's working correctly.

it is inertia actuated, so when you crash (or slam your brakes, or possibly on rough terrain) it will lock.
