View Full Version : Mercon V
NYC4X4 03-26-2007, 11:07 AM I have a '95 fsb 5.0 5 speed. In a bit of speed shopping at pep boys (too many things to do on a sunday...) I grabbed mercon V and used it in my transfer case fluid swap. Its' Penzoil mercon v and it says it can be used in all ford vehicles that require mercon or mercon v. YES I SEARCHED but I got a few conflicting answers so I figured I would post one definite question:
Is it ok to use Mercon V in a '95 transfer case?
What about the tranny - going to do that next (I have the mazda 5 speed)?
Thanks!
92builtbronco 03-26-2007, 12:18 PM according to FMC, mercon V has replaced Mercon and is an acceptible substitute.

This article supersedes TSB 01-15-7 to update the vehicle application chart.
ISSUE:
MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON® V as a service fluid.
ACTION:
Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON® can now be serviced using MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON® / MERCON® V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will only continue for however long it takes to deplete what remains in inventory.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Service automatic transmissions requiring MERCON® with MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON® / MERCON® V
For proper fluid application on current and past model vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions / transaxles refer to the fluid usage chart. (Figure 1)
CAUTION: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS / TRANSAXLES THAT REQUIRE MERCON® V SHOULD STILL ONLY USE MERCON® V OR DUAL USAGE FLUID LABELED MERCON® / MERCON® V.
CAUTION: MERCON® SP, MOTORCRAFT PREMIUM AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND MOTORCRAFT M5 ATFS ARE UNIQUE FLUIDS AND MUST BE USED IN APPLICATIONS RECOMMENDING THAT PARTICULAR FLUID. USE OF ANY OTHER FLUID MAY CAUSE REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY OR TRANSMISSION DAMAGE.
CAUTION: THE FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FLUIDS FOR CVT TRANSMISSIONS ARE VERY DIFFERENT THAN THOSE OF OTHER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUIDS (ATFS). USE OF A FLUID OTHER THAN MOTORCRAFT CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE CHAIN TYPE TRANSMISSION FLUID OR ONE LABELED AS MEETING MERCON® C WILL CAUSE FUNCTIONALITY CONCERNS AND INTERNAL TRANSMISSION DAMAGE.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID SUPPLEMENTS, ADDITIVES, TREATMENTS OR CLEANING AGENTS.

BlueBronco 03-26-2007, 05:45 PM I use the synthetic version in my t-case. The temps get insane and well above the rating of dino tranny fluid. Plus, they only hold 2 qts.

Do you have any objection to my reposting that in the TSB thread (http://fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1180823#post1180823)?

Steve, no problem, go ahead. This is why we are here, to help each other out.
imlikeojnow 03-26-2007, 07:41 PM Man it is good to know that Mercon V can be used. It is getting harder to find just mercon or mercon 3 anymore. Thanks for the TSB.
Now will mixing this affect anything cause i have mercon in mine now?
NYC4X4 03-26-2007, 08:18 PM Thanks! I appreciate all the info. Now to swap the tranny fluid. Thats if I can find a funnel that looks like a crazy straw to get the fluid into the fill hole. Not exactly the easiest place to empty a quart bottle....
Thanks again. This board rules.
imlikeojnow 03-26-2007, 08:29 PM hahahah you got to get one of the funnels with the plastic flexible thing on the end of it at wally world for like 5 bucks or so
matt4068 03-26-2007, 10:29 PM so im probably mistaken but dont we have conflicting information ???
steve83's link states : " MERCONŽ V Automatic Transmission Fluid: Engineered and recommended by Ford Motor Company for use in automatic transmissions ONLY where MERCONŽ V is specified. "
and
92builtbronco's info states : "ACTION:
Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCONŽ can now be serviced using MERCONŽ V or MERCONŽ Automatic Transmission Fluid "
so am i just reading this backwards ... or wtf??? im already loosing it because taxes suck and are confusing.
Handy_andy_cv64 03-26-2007, 10:39 PM Find a parts store that sells fluids in quart or gallon jugs with a hand pump and hose. My coworker has a quart bottle with a pump and hose that we use for pumping ATF into manuals and xfer cases.

Steve83 03-27-2007, 03:12 AM The TSB is a later publication, so go by it. IDK when they last updated that fluids page.
sewiv 03-27-2007, 03:19 AM Most Walmarts will also have long straight funnels that work fine for filling the transmission.
GTRider245 03-27-2007, 09:06 AM Or try a fluid pump
adrianspeeder 03-27-2007, 09:56 AM Only the NEW "reformulated" Mercon V is supposed to be used in the E4OD/4R100. Unfortunately there is no way to tell the new from the old other than the bar codes, and I have yet to see what Ford did to "reformulate" it for compatibility. It was rumored that people saw Ford taking back all the old Mercon V from stores and spot checking the bar codes to make sure only the new stuff was sold when that TSB came out.
The M5OD-R2 and BW1356 ain't gonna care, but I'd be worried about E4OD/4R100 owners.
Mercon V was originally made 4 years after the intro of the 4R70w because plain ole Mercon which doesn't have friction modifiers. The 4R70w needs friction modifiers, but the E4OD/4R100 is designed not to have friction modifiers in the fluid and there are many reported cases of the E4OD/4R100 dieing after the old Mercon V was mistakenly put in.
In conclusion, who the hell knows with Ford. I'd just like one hour to talk with a powertrain engineer there.

92builtbronco 03-27-2007, 10:19 AM Adrian, the powertrain engineers don't know which end is up half the time either.
amraam840 03-27-2007, 12:01 PM oooo, good read. I'm I saw this cause I just bought a case of Dexron III / Mercon and I gotta ask how that'll do. I got it to change the fluid but the stuff that's in there is still bright red and clear, but that's what the dipstick shows. I wonder what's lurking down there in the pan?
So how's the Dexron III / Mercon gonna do me? Should I return it?
matt4068 03-27-2007, 08:29 PM thats some crazy stuff, im just gonna run mercon, until i drop the pan then im putting b&m trick shift in. and if it tanks my e4od ill be pissed
but its slipping, and ive had a cooler for the better part of half a year now and havent put it on, so its my lazy ass fault..... there goes $1500

edit---$409.20 per drum... dealer cost
Need4racin 05-22-2007, 07:01 PM Thats only 25 dollars cheaper than i can buy advanced auto brand mercon. On the back of the gallon jug it says comparable to valvoline, but not produced by them.

Ok, so help me out here since my issue and your comments connect. I changed fluid a few weeks ago. I've always used synthetic Mobil 1. I'm getting parts at NAPA and just add it to the $300 dollar tuneup parts I'm getting anyway. I trust the guy behind the counter more than any other "counter guy" - we went to high school together, I've known him 20 years since then, and he has helped me with parts that others cannot figure out (that damn '96 only inner/outer/inner spindle seal crap). He tells me the fluid is fine.
It is Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle ATF that "meets or exceeds requirements of GM Dexron II, Dexron III, Ford Mercon & Mercon V."
Said this was the synthetic stuff and it is fine. BUT my trans temps have been ALL OVER the map since. For example, just driving before the fluid change (and filter in the trans pan) the fluid never got over 180, and rarely over 165. Now I see spikes to over 220. I was towing a loaded enclosed trailer (about 4,000 pounds) at 75 on the highway and no problems. Then drive to CT a day later at 75 with no load, and heating issues. I regularly need to back it down and sit in the right lane or pull over all together to let it cool down. The fluid is not burnt, it is as clear red as the day I put it in, and no odd smells or boiling over.
The cooler is a large fin and tube design that was not a problem before, and has plenty of flow when tested (I got a quart in 15 seconds at idle).
The oddity is that it is SO intermittent and inconsistent. If it were only when towing or sumsuch, I could agree the cooler is not up to par. But I can go to CT and have heat issues, but come home and have none. I can tow with no issues, and drop the trailer and go again and have issues then. W.T.F.??? (periods inserted for dramatic pause).
I do not have an external filter as I don't really care about dropping the pan. I understand that it will filter finer, but the fluid is clear and not much attached to the magnet in the pan at changes.
I have a B+M +3 quart finned aluminum pan, and at the change, the fluid had 30,000 miles and looked like the brandy-new stuff going in. The trans is from Jasper (the stage 2 unit) and has just shy of 50,000 miles. The converter came with the trans and they sealed the drain plug. I called about that when I got it, and was told I did not need to drain that. Thanks, but I'd MUCH prefer the option to (without have to drill it).
The gauge is an Autometer electric. Again, only since the last fluid change a few weeks ago, so I doubt it is the sender 'going bad." Now that it's nice in Mass I'm back on the bikes to level the MPG and enviro-effects. 10 in the winter and 45 in the summer evens out, right? :-) But it will soon be boat time, and I don't want to forego the boat to save the truck, adn won't risk the truck to enjoy the boat. No, neither is for sale. :-)
So, que es? Thoughts?
--MIKE--
What is with popcorn guy too?

the tsb is pending release. It was a information email from Fomoco. I thought it was relevent to all of us because they have come out with a new T-case fluid.

Bringing this back up and wondering if this ever became an official TSB? Is there any new news on using Mercon V in the transfer case? I replaced my transfer case fluid a few days ago using Mobil 1 Synthetic Mercon V. According to this I used the wrong fluid and am wondering if it's a big enough deal that I need to drain and refill with this new transfer case fluid?

I was worried myself, but recieved re-assurances from the board members here.
I've been running Mobil-1 for a little while now in xfer case and tranny with no problems to report.
