Transfer case oil or fluid?

I probably didn't search correctly since I'm surprised I couldn't find a definitive answer, but here goes......

What fluid or oil does my 79 transfer case take? It's the one with the shifter like this:
low lock
low
n
high
high lock

The Haynes manual says 140w, but that that seems way thick. Funny thing is it appears to have auto tranny fluid in it!!!!

Thanks for the help and feel free to rip me a new one if I missed the obvious answer somewhere.

Someone has put the lovely NP203 into your Bronco. Full time 4 wheel drive.

It uses 80W-90 gear lube.

Thanks. That 's what I ended up putting in there. 140 seemed crazy heavy to me.

I think this t-case was one of the option in 79??????

I believe the 203 should have straight 30 weight oil in it.

Theres no oil pump IIRC. its just splash lube. The weight isnt critical....heck the type of fluid isn't that critical. 80w90 or 75w90 would be a good choice because of its avaliability. 530w engine oil would be fine too. I think thats what was in it from ford.

And the np203 was a factory option in the 78-79 ford. You don't have lockout hubs in the frontend do you?

140w is a pretty heavy oil. I'd go with a little bit lighter. straight 90 weight is perfect. I've been using 90 weight since I've owned my 250 and per new standars I believe 80-90 is what manufacturer calls for now.

The original OEM maintenance listing has 30 weight as the recommended weight for tcase fluid. But actually I'm 95% sure that NVG (the new company name of NP [new process] recommends 80-90 now per new testing standards.

Some people even recommend ATF fluid, which you can use, but I'd use gear oil.

Just had my 203 gone through and resealed by my tranny guy. He recommended either 0W30 or 5W30 Mobil1 synthetic. I'll probably go with the 5W30.

I think I have atf and 90w mixed together now.

Is there a drain plug I can't find?????

The drain is the bottom bolt on the rear cover plate. The guy who resealed mine painted both the fill and the drain yellow - see this pic.

Any way to identify these changes if made?

Also, thanks for the pic above. I wish it was the same for my 9" rear. Perplexes me that I'd have to pull the third member to drain it!!!! All the other nine inch rears have had drain plugs that I have had in the past.

All the mods are internal so the only way to tell is to verify the shift pattern. Here is the shift pattern for a converted 203 -

lo 4wd
lo 2wd
n
hi 2wd
hi 4wd

Let us know what you find out.

The actual viscosity of 30w an SAE 90W are not too far apart at operating temp. I would run a 75w-90 syn were it mine. Gear oil has more extreme pressure anti wear additives. Way better for gear boxs.
